Summary
Town of Fort Smith seeks contractors to reduce wildfire hazard by thinning and removing coniferous trees, removing ladder fuels, and mulching a 10-metre-wide fuel-reduction strip along back lot lines of properties on Calder Ave and Field Street in Fort Smith, Northwest Territories. Work prioritizes removal of flammable conifers, retention of deciduous species, and minimum 3m branch spacing.
From the notice
This project is meant to reduce wildfire hazards through fuel reduction. Specifically, this project aims to thin the forest with priority to removing coniferous (needle bearing) trees. This project will further remove all fuels and mulch an area 10 meters wide along the back lot lines of developed properties on Calder Ave and Field Street. • Branch Tip Measurement: Ensure there is a minimum of 3 metres of horizontal space between the outermost branches of neighbouring coniferous trees. • Species Selection: Prioritize the removal of highly flammable conifers and retain less flammable, fire-resistant deciduous trees such as aspen, poplar, and birch. • Ladder Fuels: Remove smaller, younger evergreen trees that can act as a "ladder," allowing fire to move from the ground into the treetops.
